Day-by-Day Itinerary: Langtang Valley Trek

Day 1: Scenic Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1,550m)

Mountain Journey

Drive through Trishuli Valley to Langtang gateway.

Mountain Lodge

Overnight in Syabrubesi village.

Your Langtang adventure begins with a scenic 6-7 hour drive north from Kathmandu toward the Tibetan border. The journey follows the Trishuli River upstream through increasingly dramatic landscapes, passing traditional Tamang villages and terraced hillsides as you ascend into the Langtang region.

Syabrubesi serves as the bustling gateway to the Langtang Valley, situated at the confluence of the Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola rivers. This multicultural village provides your first taste of mountain life, with stunning views of the surrounding peaks and a lively atmosphere of trekkers and local traders preparing for their Himalayan journeys. The village has rebuilt remarkably since the 2015 earthquake, showcasing the resilience of this border community.

Forest Trek

Ascend through bamboo and rhododendron forests.

Mountain Lodge

Overnight in forest settlement.

Your trekking adventure begins as you cross the suspension bridge over the Bhote Koshi River and follow the Langtang Khola upstream. The trail climbs steadily through dense forests of bamboo, rhododendron, and pine, with the sound of the rushing river as your constant companion and occasional glimpses of waterfalls cascading down the valley walls.

The settlement known as Lama Hotel (actually a collection of lodges) sits nestled in the forest at the confluence of the Langtang Khola and one of its tributaries. This location offers your first proper mountain atmosphere and the possibility of spotting wildlife such as langur monkeys, Himalayan birds, and if you're very fortunate, the elusive red panda in the surrounding old-growth forests. The temperature drop is noticeable as you gain elevation.

Day 3: Trek to Langtang Village (3,430m)

Valley Ascent

Journey to the heart of Langtang Valley.

Cultural Immersion

Experience Tamang community hospitality.

The trail continues to climb as you emerge above the tree line into more open terrain with increasingly dramatic mountain views. You'll pass through Ghoda Tabela (meaning 'horse stable'), which serves as a checkpoint for trekking permits and offers your first clear views of Langtang Lirung's massive south face towering above the valley.

Langtang Village holds profound significance as it has been completely rebuilt following the devastating 2015 earthquake that tragically wiped out the original settlement. The resilience of the Tamang people is evident everywhere in this reconstructed village. Staying here offers a powerful opportunity to connect with this Buddhist community while surrounded by the stunning peaks of the Langtang range. The village sits in a dramatic location with Langtang Lirung (7,234m) dominating the skyline to the north.

Day 4: Trek to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m)

High Valley Trek

Ascend to the spiritual center of Langtang.

Cultural Exploration

Visit ancient monastery and cheese factory.

A shorter but spectacular trek brings you deeper into the high valley. The trail winds through yak pastures and moraines with increasingly dramatic views of the Langtang Glacier and surrounding peaks including Kimshung and Gang Chenpo. The air grows noticeably thinner, and the landscape becomes more alpine as you approach Kyanjin Gompa.

Kyanjin Gompa is both a settlement and a spiritual center, named after its ancient monastery. The village is surrounded by an amphitheater of majestic peaks and offers some of the most stunning mountain scenery in Nepal. You'll have time to visit the monastery with its prayer wheels and Buddhist artifacts, and the famous cheese factory established in the 1950s with Swiss support. Sampling the fresh yak cheese has become a rite of passage for trekkers in this valley.

Day 5: Hike to Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) & Return to Lama Hotel

Summit Day

Descent

Return journey to lower elevation.

This is the visual highlight of the trek. An early morning climb to the summit of Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) rewards you with one of the most spectacular mountain panoramas in Nepal. The 360-degree view encompasses the entire Langtang range, including Langtang Lirung, Kimshung, Gang Chenpo, Yala Peak, and the massive Langtang Glacier stretching toward Tibet. The sight of the sun rising over these majestic mountains, illuminating them in golden light, is an experience you'll cherish forever.

After descending to Kyanjin Gompa for a late breakfast, you begin your return journey. The descent is significantly easier and faster than the ascent, allowing you to appreciate the landscapes from a new perspective. You'll retrace your steps to Lama Hotel, where the thicker air and warmer temperatures at 2,380m provide welcome relief after the high altitude of Kyanjin. The familiar forest surroundings feel comforting after the stark alpine environment.
